MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

RSEA volunteers in the legislative process donate hundreds of hours every year to protect and improve the pension system and medical coverage for retirees and their survivors.

RSEA was successful in the introduction and passage of 1996 legislation that increased minimum benefits for some 4,000 retirees.

RSEA actively supported the successful change in the retirement formula for current employees.

RSEA played a leading role in obtaining both the compounding of retiree pensions, as well as 3% annual increases for survivors and other survivor benefits.

RSEA was successful in the introduction and passage of 2009 legislation that eliminated the Social Security offset applied to widow or survivor benefits.

HOWEVER, DID YOU KNOW?

That most existing State of Illinois retirees have the dubious distinction of receiving the 49th lowest retirement benefits in the nation? Even those who retired under the new formula rank only in the middle range when comparing retirement benefits by state.

There is no minimum benefit payment for widows and survivors, and that for more than ten years widows and survivors received no raise, until they began to receive the annual 3% increase in 1990.

That in virtually every legislative session, there are proposals to tax pension benefits?

RSEA IS WORKING TO IMPROVE AND PROTECT YOUR PENSION BENEFITS:

RSEA will vigorously oppose legislation that would in any way divert pension funds from their sole purpose of providing benefits to pension system members.

RSEA will oppose any attempt to expand the current state income tax to include pension income. Although previous proposals targeted only those receiving substantial pensions, we all know that once the concept is on the books, it would be tempting to expand it to include all pensions.
